The community defibrillator is located at the front of St. Colman's Church, Corofin. The defibrillator is an invaluable piece of equipment to have within the community, as it is intended to improve the survival rate from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest by reducing the treatment wait time. In the event of a person suffering cardiac arrest, the defibrillator (also known as an AED) can deliver an electric shock through the chest wall, which helps the heart to resume normal activity. The defibrillator is located in a cabinet at the front of St. Colman's Church, along with a list of the contact details for the trained Defibrillator Team. The team are a group of local volunteers who have been trained and certified to operate the defibrillator in the case of an emergency before the emergency services arrive - thus saving valuable time. In the event of an emergency, the emergency services should be contacted immediately, followed by contacting the Defibrillator Team from the contact list. The defibrillator is located in a locked cabinet, with the key stored in an emergency-access box; the key can be easily accessed by breaking the emergency glass, which allows the cabinet to be opened.
